I did a rather sudden and somewhat uneducated plunge into the world of music on vinyl. Being 37 years old and growing up in the convenient digital era I had no real knowledge of it. My dad still loves records and swear they sound better yet he rarely plays them anymore, instead favoring the convenience of digital. So I spoke with a coworker who loves his music and while he doesn't have the desire to get into music on vinyl, he has researched it extensively and recommended this TT to me. I've had it for a little over a month now and have bought five Nine Inch Nails albums for it, and so far and I haven't had a single problem with it. The automatic start/stop function is very nice, but slow... Though admittedly it's probably safer to use though so as to avoid scratching your records or damaging the stylus because the cartridge handle is so tiny. I've only played 11 records on it (multiple times) running into my RCA inputs on an old 2000's Aiwa stereo system. I'm really, really happy with the sound quality and overall reliability of the TT. I haven't had any skipping or noticeable speed deviation when playing records and the overall experience is just fun. As for the USB function... I think this is kind of silly. Unless you have records with music on them that you can't get digitally, I don't really see a point. I'd much rather a clean digital copy of my music than take the time and effort to record music from a record and have a digital copy of an imperfect playback when I can get a digital copy. This is assuming of course a 'quality' digital copy, which not of them are and perhaps the music on an original all analog record is better - in which case have at it I suppose. I also see there is a Bluetooth version of this TT and I find that completely counter-intuitive. With the compression of wireless BT you're playing your downgrading your music to mp3 quality. Why? Unless you absolutely can't get that music digitally, there is no point. I don't get it... Anyway, if you are a newbie to vinyl records, or a veteran and just want to get back into it with new, modern manufactured tech then I think this TT is a good low-medium cost option. If you really want to get back into it there are probably better options, but this seems like a good reliable starting point that will hopefully last quite some time. With all that said, time for some opinion on the subject of music quality. I think everyone wants a solid answer on which is better but I just don't think there is one, at least not across the entire wide spectrum of music available. I think it varies wildly depending on a lot of factors, least of which is what the listener is expecting to hear. By that I mean, if you grew up listening to analog music then even if a remastered digital copy is technically 'better' sounding, you may still prefer the original analog. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. I think how the music was mixed and mastered, along with the final quality of the medium the music is put on; from vinyl record to a digital file - it is going to vary from album to album, even within the same artist and even recording studio. I'm a huge fan of Nine Inch Nails, and at least for their NIN albums, I think quality FLAC digital copies sound slightly better; being more crisp and clear. I came to this conclusion after extensively comparing sections of the same songs playing simultaneously, switching back and forth between inputs to hear the record and the FLAC file I ripped from the CD. Don't get me wrong, the record sounds fantastic, and the difference is really that the record only sounds a tiny, tiny, tiny little bit 'muddier' compared to crisp digital. If I wasn't going back and forth to compare, I would say they sound the same - the difference is THAT small. Either way I've decided enjoying music is more about the overall experience for me and not just audio quality. As long as the record doesn't sound noticeably worse - I will play the record as my preferred method of enjoying music. I like the physical handling of records and playing them, taking a few seconds break to flip sides or switch to another disc. I like opening the huge album jacket and looking at the artwork, reading the lyrics, and just dedicating myself to the process of enjoying music. I hadn’t owned a record player for many years, so I thought I’d get a basic one for my small collection of vinyl. I don’t intend to play my records every day, so I don’t want to spend an arm and a leg. I was looking for an affordable, decent quality automatic turntable and noticed this model made by Audio Technica. I know it is a popular trusted brand for turntables. Automatic turntables were the norm for record players back in the 80s. The AT-LP60X is not a cheap system that requires manual interaction to lift the needle. This one has both automatic and manual operation of the arm, and it also has a fair amount of dampening so that gravity doesn’t cause it to fall smack onto the record. Surprisingly the far more expensive Audio Technica LP120X model does not have this automatic feature. Operation is easy - press Start to start the turntable and automatically lift the arm/needle and play the record from beginning; press Stop to send the arm back to the resting spot and stop the turntable; press the third button to lift the needle during playback so you can manually jump between songs. The Start button can also be pressed during playback to reset the needle back to the beginning of the record. Very simple. There are also buttons to adjust the speed and size of the record being played. The turntable platter is easy to install, and if you are unsure how to set up and use the player there are plenty of YouTube videos to help you out. When it comes to budget record players, overall the LP60X is noticeably better overall than those suitcase-style record players made by Crosley, Innovative Technology, Victrola and others. I made the mistake of buying a suitcase type on sale a few years back and it was subpar in all aspects - in build quality, useability and sound. The arm/needle needed to be manually lifted and placed on the record and you had to make sure you didn’t drop it directly onto the record (there is no dampening). Plus the needle on the suitcase models causes sooner damage to the records due to the heavier downward pressure applied to the record. In comparison, the LP60x sounds better, and even better than those I owned in the 80s and 90s. I’m very pleased. Also when I compare it to my previous record players, the old records don’t have as much audible hiss or “swishing” of the ‘S’ sound when sung. One thing I noticed about the the suitcase players was that they sounded too “stale” when played on the same external soundbar, which led me to think the record itself was at fault. There was barely any low end frequency. On the other hand, the LP60X proved I was wrong about that assumption; it really made the records more enjoyable to listen to. I’ve read various reviews about the plastic cover/lid on the LP60X being a negative. I’m puzzled about what the big deal is. It looks solid and is built sturdy and tough. It’s not thin flimsy plastic. I’d rather have this cover than worry about a heavy glass cover come crashing down. The two record players I had in the 80s and 90s had plastic lids and they weren’t an issue. In general I’m not too bothered about the build quality on this record player. The only issue I have is that whenever I remove the record from the player, the cloth pad below it keeps coming off with it. I could probably fix this by applying a thin adhesive on the cloth to the turntable. After several days though this has become less of an issue. I haven’t tested the USB slot but it‘s good to have just in case and was only a $20 extra feature over the base model. I will try it out so that I can digitally back up a couple out-of-print vintage records of mine. When I do that I will update this review. UPDATE: I was able to record from my vinyl to my Mac using Audacity and the USB cable. However, one important thing you need to do, which is not mentioned anywhere, is to go to Settings -> Security & Privacy -> Privacy tab -> Microphone, and then allow Audacity access to the mic. Otherwise the “USB core audio” device (the record player) cannot be monitored and/or recorded by Audacity. Read more
