Just received these this afternoon. I already own Amirons, DT 880s and DT 770s and Grado SR80s. I’m not a fan of Sennheiser, so anyone who is familiar with both Beyerdynamic and Sennheiser headphones will appreciate that this is a subjective review by someone who likes Beyerdynamic’s house sound. This review is my assessment of them purely for home use. There are obviously loads of reviews of the 990s on the internet, and although very popular they obviously divide opinion. I shan’t make out that these are for everybody, but I’ll add my three pennies worth here which might cut through the superlative laden ayes and the damning nays and help some people to make up their minds on whether or not to buy a pair (I dithered for far too long). When I was in my early twenties I might have found the Beyerdynamic sound too bright and analytical, but back then I could hear frequencies up to 20khz; not so now, at 63 my hearing tops out just under 14khz, so maybe this accounts for my later-in-life infatuation with the Beyerdynamic sound. Though I like most forms of music, the bulk of my collection veers towards acoustic music - classical, jazz etc - there’s also a fair bit of dub reggae, rock, EDM and so on (so, it’s basically Prince Far-I to Schubert, Aphex Twin to CSNY, Thelonious Monk to Joni Mitchell, Public Enermy to Spirit, Poppy Ackroyd to Bob Dylan - catholic, essentially). I’ve only had a few hours to make comparisons (Bill Withers, Thelonious Monk, Radio 3, Bill Charlap, Heart of the Congos, Lana Del Rey), but I think this has given me adequate opportunity to make a pretty accurate judgement of the characteristics and comparative merits of the 990s. I’ve been listening to them mainly through a Little Dot Mk 2 with a combination of Novosibirsk and Mullard 8100 valves (sourcing from a Cyrus Cd and Cyrus 8 DAC amplifier). I’m delighted with the 990s. They are neither shriekingly sibilant nor either lacking or over-endowed with bass. Compared to the other headphones that I own I would say that the 990s are nearest in sound to the 880s. Indeed, I think that they are very near sound-wise. The 880s are marginally more polished, but the difference (to my ears at least) is subtle rather than dramatic. I would suggest that the 990s are very good, cheaper alternatives to the 880s. The 880s clamp the head noticeably more lightly than the 990s, but the 990s are more secure on the head. Sound leakage is similar in both, so neither are good for listening to next to your sleeping partner (who hates going off to music and especially hates jazz) in bed unless you want a poke in the ribs. For this I have the 770s, which have a somewhat “fuller” or “fatter” sound than the other two. Leakage on the 770s is minimal at low to modest volumes. The Amirons (Homes) are, to my mind, decidedly more “musical” or “liquid” sounding headphones, very enjoyable for extended listening and very revealing, in comparison with those I would describe the 990s and 880s as rather “analytical” sounding and the 770s are somewhat “dryer” (I hope describing their sound as both “dryer” and “fatter” doesn’t sound like a contradiction in terms but I can’t immediately think of a better words to describe the sound). However, they’re all good and all have what you might call a “house sound” (i.e. a Beyerdynamic sound), although the Amirons depart furthest from this sound (which isn’t really very far at all) while the others might all be considered even more typical. The Amirons have a fuller, certainly pleasant and, I would say, slightly coloured bass by comparison, the bass on the 880s and 990s is leaner and, as far as I am qualified to judge, seemingly more accurate. Some people say that they both lack bass, but I don’t think this it true, it is most certainly there when it’s there! It may be that those who think they lack bass are listening to these headphones without suitable amplification. As goes the 770s, I’d say that their bass - in terms of weight - lies in the middle here, it is perfectly good but it is neither as accurate as on the 880s and 990s nor as pleasurable as on the Amirons. Sound stage is best, and very similar, on the 990s, 880s and Amirons. I wouldn’t say that there is any vastly significant difference here between these three headphones. The 770s, being closed-back, are noticeably more “closed-in” in terms of soundstage but, in terms of closed-back headphones per se they’re actually really rather good in this area; I’ve certainly not encountered a closed-back pair that are better (or indeed any other closed-back pair that I can actually bear - I personally much prefer open-back designs, for me the 770s are exceptions in this department). The 1770s may well be better, but I’m not about to fork out several hundred pounds more for those when I use closed-back headphones mostly for listening in bed via the headphone output of a Roberts radio. As regards comparison with the Grado SR 80s, the 990s and 880s are decidedly superior sounding, with the Grados sounding rather rough and uncouth by comparison (though this isn’t helped by the Grados comfort levels which are simply not in the same league - half an hour with Grado SR80 ear pads is sheer torture; consequently I’ve replaced them with Sennheiser HD414 ear pads which improbably (as, apart from being yellow, they don’t seem materially that different from the Grado pads) improve matters a fair bit and don’t noticeably change the SR80s sound). The Grados do sound more bassy, but this is definitely a matter of quantity rather than quality. Build quality on the Grado SR80s is also markedly inferior to that of the Beyerdynamics. I would retire the Grados at this point, but their 32 Ohm impedance makes them useful. They’re good fun, but they’re not good for extended listening sessions. The 990s and 880s with their 250 Ohm impedance definitely need amplification. I use a couple of Little Dot Mk 2s. The Amirons have the same impedance but are significantly more sensitive. For unamplified use I find the 770s a better match with their 80 Ohm impedance (they certainly work well with most Roberts radios of recent years, Roberts seem to have pretty good headphone circuits on their radios). Summing up, I think that the 990s are fantastic value for money (the Amiron Homes, which I love, are perhaps a clear case of diminishing returns by comparison). If you’re thinking of buying a pair of Beyerdynamics, want open-backed headphones, fancy the 880s from all you’ve read, but feel that the 880s are a stretch for you financially, then I think you’d be missing very little with the 990s in terms of sound). Originally, I had thought of purchasing Beyerdynamic’s new DT900 X headphones, but - reading the reviews, and knowing how much I already liked the sound of the 880s and 770s - I thought I’d save myself some money and get something that might not sound so hugely different for half the price and, beyond that, I actually prefer the look of the 990s. I don’t rule out considering the new series in future, but for now I don’t feel I’m missing out on anything that would be game-changing, although I admit I’m curious. As I have found repeatedly, however wild the superlatives I encounter in the reviews the actual differences between the last and the latest model of a particular piece of hifi is more often than not a matter of nuance. Whatever way you cut it, comparing the 990s with the highly regarded and (to me) very similar sounding 880s and the more refined, more relaxed, but four or five times more expensive Amiron Homes, they are still very good sounding headphones and first class value for money - assuming, like me, you like the Beyerdynamic sound. If you’re a Sennheiser fan you’d probably be barking up the wrong tree (but you know that already) and, if you’re a Beats fan, then presumably you’re already stone deaf. And then again, as goes highly regarded budget headphones, I reckon they knock the Grado SR80s into a cocked hat. But not everyone would agree with me. Anyway, I hope all that helps. Update, 28/1/22. I’ve now spent some more time listening to the 990s on a Little Dot Mk 2 with a combination of Novosibirsk and Radio Technique valves (sourcing from a Naim CD5 via a Rega Elex R). The Radio Technique valves are very similar to the Mullard 8100s I used at the top of this piece. Continued close listening has only confirmed my sense of how good these headphones are. On further consideration, with this set up, I’d say their sound signature lies between that of the 880s and the Amirons. I’d say they sound slightly “weightier” than the 880s and that the Amirons are a bit more so, but the differences here are more subtle than seismic. On careful comparison, after a few hours of listening, my overwhelming sense at this point is that, if you like open-backed headphones, like the Beyerdynamic sound and have a hankering for a pair of Amirons but either can’t afford them or can’t justify the expense, then you really wouldn’t be missing very much at all by just settling for a pair of 990s. By comparison they are a real bargain and, I think, in absolute terms they are quite simply one of the best bargains there is on the headphone market. One further point, on comfort, although the 990s have more clamping force on the head, I actually find them more comfortable than the Amirons as they fit my head better. Finally, as anyone who has read this far has already probably figured out, it has cost me quite a lot to reach my conclusions here. I think I have a reasonable sense of humour, but if you’re an audiophile sceptic then I guess I can understand why you may feel you’re getting the last laugh! I’m glad I own the Amirons, they are very nice headphones, but if I could only have one pair I must admit that I’d very happily settle for the 990s. Postscript, 31/1/22. On further reflection, it’s very good having several headphones all sharing a general character that I like, but each a little different from the others. Different music works best on certain headphones (for instance, listening to Beatrice Rana’s performance of the Goldberg Variations this morning I much prefer the rendition of her piano’s sound through the Amirons to that of the 770s (the piano sounding decidedly more lifelike through the Amirons), whereas with Thelonious Monk’s It’s Monk’s Time the difference is less obvious and, if anything, I’d say I actually prefer the 770s with their greater attack. But, different music is not all: different recordings, different source equipment, different mood of the listener ... however, it’s very quick and easy to change between modestly priced headphones during a listening session in order to optimise your listening experience (something you can’t readily do with expensive speakers, amplifiers, cartridges and so on). The comfort that these headphones provide after breaking them in for a few days is unreal, the audio quality is also crisp, with a more "fun" tone, however for streaming purposes, the open-backed design is optimal, allowing you to head your own voice more easily whilst speaking, and providing a simplistic yet optimal solution for such purposes. The build quality also justified the potentially off-putting price too, with a sturdy and robust construction with a central metal headband surrounded with an easily detachable faux leather buttoned cover. This allows for maintenance over time and for repairs if needed, defying an otherwise common practice of planned obsolescence and disruption of right-to-repair. Finally, the cable itself is very high quality, and is rather long, ensuring that it will not become an issue, whilst also seemingly being resistant to tangling and interference. The headphones weight is relatively average, perhaps on the heavier side, however once the headphones have been broken in, you almost forget you are wearing them. I use these headphones for a mixture of gaming and music listening, and i can easily say that they perform extremely well for both applications. I have been able to hear the smallest details whilst gaming with ease (such as otherwise hard-to-notice distance footsteps), and have also been able to hear small details whilst listening to music in much the same manner. Overall, I can easily recommend these headphones to anyone looking for a quality product, however I will mention that for the best experience listening, an audio interface / amplifier is recommended to reach comfortable levels at high quality. This is not as much of an issue with the 80ohm variant as with the 250ohm variant, however it should still be considered regardless. Read more

Bewusst 80 Ohm genommen. Sind am Elgato XLR angeschlossen, das Teil könnte niemals 250 Ohm befeuern. Mal zum Testen an den PC angeschlossen, Lautstärker reicht immer noch völlig aus, aber schon etwas leiser. Wenn ich die Kopfhörer an meine Logitech-Lautsprecher anschließen (welche ebenfalls einen Kopfhöreranschluss haben) höre ich fast gar nichts mehr. Es gilt also die altbewährte Weisheit: Man muss sich im Klaren sein, wie viel Ohm man befeuern kann, und entsprechend hier einkaufen. Für mich, als Bass-Head, ist der Bass sehr mager. Das ist wohl die Qual der Wahl. Ich habe sonst immer AirPods Max verwendet, geschlossene Kopfhörer mit super Sound, aber auch einer Menge hochgedrehten Bass, damit's einfach ballert. Das fehlt mir hier zwar, aber das ist eigentlich auch eher weniger Sinn des Produkts, sondern vernünftiger Sound für Reverenz-Zwecken. Bei allen Tracks, die nicht sonderlich auf Bass aufbauen, kommen die Kopfhörer so richtig zur Geltung. Meiner Freundin z.B. fehlt der Bass fast gar nicht, ist also eine sehr subjektive Geschichte. Produkt wirkt insgesamt sehr wertig. Sehr langes Kabel, solide Qualität, kann man echt nicht meckern. These DT 990 PROs are honestly some of the best headphones I’ve ever used — especially for the price. If you’re into music, gaming, or just love great sound, you’ll probably love these too. First off, they’re super comfy. The ear pads are soft and feel great, even during long sessions. I can wear them for hours without my ears hurting or feeling too warm. Come creativa, sono spesso alla ricerca di strumenti che mi permettano di lavorare con precisione e ispirazione, e queste cuffie rispondono a entrambe le esigenze in modo eccellente. ## Qualità sonora ## La prima cosa che ho notato indossandole è la scena sonora: ampia e incredibilmente dettagliata. Lo primero de todo ¡¡Las almohadillas son muy cómodas, incluso con las gafas puestas!! No te clavan las patillas, presiona lo justo y el peso ni se nota. Llevo para trabajar o jugar en el PC, gafas por vista cansada y no había encontrado ninguna opinión, que hablara de esto. Así que aquí dejo la Mía!! Muy cómodos incluso con gafas!! Y tengo cabezón!! Sobre el sonido no diré mucho, porqué la opinión es algo subjetiva en este aspecto. Hay gente que le gustan unos bajos tuneados o exagerados, y a otros les gusta un sonido más natural o realista, independientemente del estilo de música. Y Quien tiene razón, cual es mejor? Diría que éstos auriculares son para la gente que sabe buscar el sonido que les gusta mediante un ecualizador. Para el que le guste los bajos tuneados o exagerados, me iría a por unos auriculares cerrados y de menos precio. Más teniendo en cuenta que el oído se acaba acostumbrando a lo que le demos, y aunque unos más baratos igual no tienen un sonido tan nítido, seguro que también es bueno y potente, dejando más satisfecho a l@s que busquen ese tipo de bajos exagerados. Yo aconsejo los 990 pro, si valoras la comodidad y la ligereza, para meterte sesiones maratonianas y no cansarte. El sonido también lo encuentro muy bueno, lleno de matices. J'ai prit ce casque pour utilisation sur mon PC fixe ( gaming / discord et vidéo) je voulais un casque ouvert car je ne supporte pas l'effet "sous l'eau" des casque fermé quand on parle , de plus chez moi c'est très calme donc aucune raison d'avoir une isolation sonore ( ça m'évite d'ailleurs de gueulé sans m'en rendre compte). J'ai prit le casque en 80ohm pour plusieurs raison le casque dans cette configuration à un tout petit plus de basse (ce que je préfère) certes au prix d'une légère perte dans les précisions des aigues mais honnêtement c'est du chipotage pour une utilisation gaming (le 250omh n'aurai jamais vraiment montré son plein potentielle). Ma carte mère dispose d'une petite puce qui fais "pré ampli" et peu faire tourné un casque de 80ohm facile cependant j'ai quand même du augmenté le volume du casque pour avoir un peu de puissance (je suis passer de 50% a 80%) je pense que le casque avec une vrai interface audio (que je vais bientôt acheter (une SSL2) ) le casque pourrai me réservé quelque chose de fou , je métrai a jour le commentaire pour vous dire mon ressentie. En tout cas même sans interface audio ou carte son de folie le casque est déjà super ! le son est d'excellente qualité et le confort du casque ( à mon sens l'un des points le plus incroyable) est fou je peu le porté pendant plusieurs heure sans avoir l'impression d'avoir quelque chose sur la tête ! plus petit point positif pour la réparabilité du casque , quasiment tout les composant de ce dernier ce trouve sur le site officiel ou même Amazon , un casque increvable en somme. I have headphones of almost all the famous brands (with and without Active Noise Cancellation... Bose Sound True, Bose Quite Comfort, Senneheiser, Sony, JBL, Audio Technica... Everything have theire own advantages and disadvantages. But this one too good, in terms of Sound Quality and comfort. No other headphones are near to this. Note that, it is open ear headphones. People next to you, may hear slight sound. So, it is not an Active Noise Cancellation. But it is the reason, you get comfort. It will not generate heat, even if you wear long time. It allows air circulation, while you are listening to songs. Earpad quality is also very good. This makes us comfortable to wear it. It is light weight. The cable length is ridiculously too lenghty. If you are plugged the audio jack to TV or a sound system, you can walk throuh the complete hall, with the headphones on your head! It is so lengthy! They should have been given detachable cables. However the cable is tangle free. If they had given detachable feature, we could use the cable of suitable length, depending on your need. I feel, this is one small disadvantage. Earlier this week I had no fewer than five headphone sets strewn around me. This included the much lauded Sony MDR-7506 Professional Studio Headphones, AKG-72, OneOdio, another Beyer-Dynamics headset, and an old Plantronics Gamecom headset. I had used the Plantronics for years, but it physically snapped in two a few months ago. I had tied it together with Duck-tape and tried various solutions. The first set I bought was the OneOdio unit, but I found the bass too overwhelming ( it is a closed back set - since the events described below, I have stuck chair-coasters on the cans so they cannot close completely on my head, but it is very uncomfortable). Consulting with various people who should know, I was directed to the Sony MDR-7506 Professional Studio Headphones. I eagerly bought those. I could not handle my own excitement when these highly lauded headphones arrived. I shoved them on my head, but the sound they emitted was truly ghastly. It seemed to consist of overwhelming bass and a screeching treble peak at 2.5kHz, and little else. They made my delicate acoustic guitar sound like a Fender Telecaster on its bridge pickup. My great anticipation turned to disappointment, and my disappointment turned into anger and then into sheer hatred. I went off to the local music store and came home with an AKG-72 headset. It was better-sounding than the much more expensive Sony set, but the bass was still unnaturally high. I think teenage girlies like it like that. I then searched for my old Duck-taped Plantronics set on Amazon and found it (https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B001KUSXXU), but it had been discontinued. However, the first line of its description made a point of stating "Open-ear design keeps you connected to the game and your surroundings". Apparently the key to my misery was that I needed "Open-ear" (open back) headphones. I do a lot of online jamming, and for that one needs to be able to both listen AND sing. With the Sony set, any attempt to sing while wearing those headphones was ridiculous. It was like trying to sing with a serious head cold and one's fingers stuck in one's ears. It was simply A-W-F-U-L. One's voice droned in one's head to the exclusion of all else. When I took the AKG set back, the shop gave me a Beyer-Dynamic DT-990 250 Ohm open back set and told me to take that PLUS the AKG home and to try them and see what I conclude. The Beyer-Dynamic DT-990 was obviously the solution. HOWEVER, its 250 Ohm impedance was a bit much for my little interface I was using for online jamming. But, lo and behold, when I took a look on Amazon, I found that Beyer-Dynamic were offering an 80 Ohm unit of the "same" DT-990. I immediately ordered this device and took back the AKG and the 250 Ohm headphone sets to the music shop. They could not provide the 80 Ohm device, otherwise I would have bought it from them. I am now the proud owner of a lovely German-designed 80 Ohm Beyer-Dynamic DT-990 headphone set manufactured in Germany. The sound through it is quite natural, and when I wear it AND sing, there is no sensation of "fingers in the ear" or "head cold". The overwhelming bass is gone and in its place is a well-tempered bass balance. The inhuman screeching treble of the Sony is nowhere in sight. In fact, that 2.5kHz response of the BT-990 is MANY decibels lower than the Sony and vastly better matched to the natural human hearing system. These are the headphones for folks who are prepared to spend at least around $200 for a decent set of headphones. Folks with hearing loss at 2.5kHz may well wish to consider the Sony set. Those are telephone frequencies. For my part, I can now jam online again and sing as I do so. All this without getting frustrated out of my skull as with the Sony set. Over and above all this, the DT-990s are very comfortable and one can wear them all evening and not notice it after a while. All the comparisons I made above were done using a Mackie 1202-VLZPRO mixer, which has three equalizer controls at 12kHz, 2.5 kHz and 80 kHz respectively. With the Sony set, I had to crank the 2.5kHz control almost all the way around anti-clockwise to get the response at that frequency to anywhere near reasonable. Read more

Beyerdynamic are the best headphones in the price range. For those that aren’t familiar with this make … 770 series are Closed Back, 880 are Semi Open and the 990 series are Fully Open Back. They very comfortable to wear for long listening sessions. I like the Fully Open back as it gives a more Spacious sound. For the Non-Technically minded, you should know that (which ever series) … … headphones with a high ohm number need more power e.g. 990 series with 600 ohms are better for use with a hi-fi Amp or a Mixer Desk. The lower values e.g 80 ohms or lower are best suited to Music Player (MP3 etc.) and iPhones etc. High value ohms will still work with MP3 / iPhones etc. but they will just not be as loud. J’avais acheté ce casque pour mon Home studio. Je l’avais toujours vu sur la tête des mes artistes et youtubeurs préférés, après avoir regardé des vidéos sur le casque j’ai décidé de l’acheter pour faire mes mixes et masters de mes musiques! Même si les aigus sont moins pas mal mis en avant sur ce casque, je ne trouve pas ça dérangeant, au contraire, il se révèle très précis et détaillés, mes médiums sont bons et les basses pas mal présentés et profondes pour être un casque ouvert. Elle sont punchy, précises et pas du tout trop boosté comme j’ai déjà pu lire (bien sûr le son est très subjectif). La qualité de construction est très bien, même s’il est presque entièrement en plastique, il est assez qualitatif, les coussinets sont très confortables et doux (et remplaçables) et ne surchauffes pas vos oreilles. L’arceau est en métal recouvert d’un revêtement en faux cuir qui est très confortable et remplaçable lui aussi! Bref selon moi pour le prix c’est un excellent casque que j’utilise pour faire de la musique et aussi pour jouer! Read more

And when I opened that link there was no item I could leave my feedback. Thankfully, the headphones are just fine and working properly even if It was not properly boxed. The velours on the earcups are so comfortable around my ears. It doesn't hurt my jaws and around my ears even after wearing it for hours! Unlike my previous headphones. It has a wide soundstage perhaps because it's open back and sounds even better with my DAC/amp. I'd definitely recommend these headphones to my peers and family. You can remedy it with EQ, but do more research if this is the headphone for you or if you might be better of with another model or brand. It is not only a good choice for professional producers, but also for amateur musicians and content creators, such as podcasters and streamers, who use audio interfaces with rather low-voltage headphone preamps.
